Collector’s CAC Disillusionment

Disillusionment, noun: a feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be.

“WE SEE A LOT OF THAT. UNFORTUNATELY.”

Response of a nearby well known national dealer at the PCGS Philadelphia Members Only Show this past weekend after overhearing a question posed to me by a disillusioned collector.

The collector had been drinking the CAC Kool-Aid, as constantly spouted through Legend’s web site (although it is widely believed throughout the dealer community that Legend’s real motive for scaring collectors into CAC [...]

Are There Lessons for Numismatica in the Hollywood/Weinstein Scandal?

Are There Lessons for Numismatica in the Hollywood/Weinstein Scandal?

Organizations such as the ANA, PNG, ICTA and the Numismatic Press all excel at ignoring the inconvenient truth. Sound familiar?

Money trumps evil. Donations lead to blindness. ANA, PNG, ICTA, Press look the other way.

From a previous article, cited below:
“I have often contended that one of the most severe weaknesses of the numismatic industry and the associations that are supposed to oversee and protect the public and the industry is that far too often they all look the other way on issues of ethics and fraudulent behavior. In many [...]

CAC Beauties :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

Is This What You Want??????????? Really???????????

The five coins above are all CAC “Approved” and have appeared in recent Auctions. They may not be the norm, but they certainly are not the exceptions either. I’ve seen a lot more like them.

1892 Indian Cent PR-66+RB. Messy surfaces and a vertical scratch on the face that requires a yard stick to measure. 66+ ??? CAC ???

1906 Indian Cent PR-67RB. Really?

1863 CN PR-66CAM. Unattractive. Look closely around the date and rims.

1877 PR-65BN. The reverse is even worse. Yeh, I’m scratching my head too!

1937 [...]

Toned Copper Coins–Don’t be Spooked by the Ramblings of Fools

Let’s Kill Another Urban Legend

by Larry Shepherd

One of the recurring “Urban Legends” of the various Coin Forums is that blue toning on copper is not natural and is caused by subjecting the coin to some coin cleansing product like MS-70.

This false narrative has been repeated hundreds of times by self proclaimed experts, on forums and at coin shows, over the last decade or so. Their only basis of knowledge is that they heard or read it from some other self proclaimed expert on some forum.

Over the past thirty years [...]
