How Did Some Proof Indian Cents Become So Beautifully Toned?

How Did Some Proof Indian Cents Become So Beautifully Toned?

Input from Rick Snow via a post on the Toned Proof Indian Cent Collectors site:

We can thank Dealers from the 1870’s and 1880’s for these toners. David Proskey, A.M. Smith and others bought the remainders of the cent, three cent and five cent Proofs from the Mint at face value at the end of each year. They held them in envelopes that toned them until they died. They were distributed mostly in the 1930’s. By then they had acquired incredible toning. They started acquiring them in 1877 and continued [...]

The Color of Proof Indian Cent Toning is Related to Dates

Proof Indian Cent Toning is Often a Function of Date Range – 1889-1898

You can often predict the date range of a toned proof Indian Cent just by looking at the color. For example blue/green, teal or turquoise is very likely to be a date from 1882 to 1888, as shown elsewhere. But starting 1889 and running through 1898, colors turn deeper and shades of dark blue, magenta, and purple dominate, as you can see above.

Are There Lessons for Numismatica in the Hollywood/Weinstein Scandal?

Are There Lessons for Numismatica in the Hollywood/Weinstein Scandal?

Organizations such as the ANA, PNG, ICTA and the Numismatic Press all excel at ignoring the inconvenient truth. Sound familiar?

Money trumps evil. Donations lead to blindness. ANA, PNG, ICTA, Press look the other way.

From a previous article, cited below:
“I have often contended that one of the most severe weaknesses of the numismatic industry and the associations that are supposed to oversee and protect the public and the industry is that far too often they all look the other way on issues of ethics and fraudulent behavior. In many [...]

The Color of Money. Written by Ron Guth, President of PCGS CoinFacts

Larry’s comment: Don’t listen to ego-centric, big mouth fools like Stewart Blay and others who pretend to be experts (they’re not) on Coin Forums, and spew a lot of inaccurate and misleading phony information that gets repeated by others equally not in the know. My strong advice is don’t listen to anything you read on an amateur forum, unless it is posted by a TRUE expert–and there aren’t very many of them!

The article below is written by one of the leading experts in the hobby. Ron Guth has a [...]

FUN Show Signals Great Start to New Year

The 2017 FUN Show in Fort Lauderdale was Awesome!!!
The FUN Show kicks off every year and sets the tone for the months that follow. This year we could not have asked for a better start.

The 2017 FUN Show was held in Fort Lauderdale, rather than the normal Orlando venue, and it simply could not have been better. The venue was terrific, with a great location and an outstanding convention center, and the show was packed with people from start to finish. It seemed like every major collector in [...]

Trump Rally?

Has the Election Turned the Coin Market?
I just stepped off the airplane coming home from the PCGS Member’s Only Show in Las Vegas about two hours ago. It was by far the best-attended, most active, most upbeat PCGS Show, or any coin show for that matter, in the last three years. The floor was crammed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and a lot of business was being done from morning to afternoon. Wholesale activity was the strongest of any PCGS Show of the past year, and there were several [...]

The Coins that Fueled the Industrial Revolution

1806 England, PCGS PR-68DCAM

From the collection of the Soho Mint, Matthew Boulton, and James Watt, preserved throughout history as part of the James watt Estate. Produced in 1806 as a prototype for Boulton and Watt to present to King George of England to show why the Soho Mint should mint coinage for England.

Flawlessly preserved with surfaces and color as struck. Undoubtedly one of the the finest quality pre-1850 coins in existence worldwide. It would take many decades before the U.S. Mint could do work equal to this standard. Size [...]

From the Collection of Matthew Boulton, James Watt, and the Soho Mint

Pedigreed to Boulton and Watt; the coins that fueled the Industrial Revolution.

1821 St. Helena Copper Halfpenny, PCGS PR-68DCAM

From the collection of the Soho Mint, Matthew Boulton, and James Watt*, fathers of the Industrial Revolution. This very coin, produced in 1821 as a one-of-a-kind prototype by Boulton and Watt, founders of the Soho Mint, to present to the leadership of St. Helena to show why the Soho Mint should mint coinage for St. Helena. Struck in the same year Napolean sought exile in St. Helena, bringing worldwide attention to the [...]

Email from a Former SIMCO Customer 10/10/15

This is a nice email I received today from a wonderful customer who purchased numerous coins from me in the mid-90’s.
I love to get feedback like this! I want every one of my customers to have this kind of experience.

Larry,
Read your description below. A blast from the past. Your original SIMCO description as stated in your catalogue:

“1897-O PCGS MS-64  This coin is AWESOME! Untoned, and blazing white, this monster is struck up like a proof, light years better than the pancake strike often found on this date. [...]

Fun Time at the PCGS Member’s Only Show

“That was the best 45 minutes I ever spent with ANY coin dealer ever!”

Posting on the PCGS U.S. Coin Forum, 9/3/15, by AUandAG:

First let me apologize for not taking a camera and I don’t own one of those cell phones either.

But, went to drop off a bunch of Morgans for grading and did not plan on spending much time looking for material as I’m pretty much dead broke at the moment. And of course this is when you see your holy grail and can’t buy it….Nah, not the case [...]

Picked Off by a 12 Year Old

Wonderful Experience with a Young Collector at the ANA Show

During the second day of the Chicago/Rosemont ANA Show last week a young boy and his mother stopped to look at my coins. Both of them were highly enthusiastic and it was quickly apparent this was no normal 12 year old, when it came to coins. He’d done his homework and it was easy to recognize he “gets it.”
He and his mom asked all the right questions, and even more importantly, they listened and absorbed the answers. I did [...]
