1869 Indian Cent Proof with Incredible Eye Appeal – $7650

1869 Indian Cent PCGS Gold Shield PR-66RB. None graded finer.

1869 is one of the most difficult dates (top 5) in the Proof Indian Cent series to find in high grade and a nearly impossible date to find with any noticeable attractive color. Next to the coin in my personal collection, which replaced this coin, it is the finest example I have ever seen or offered. The surfaces are nearly flawless, so upgrade to 66+ would not be out of the question.

About Coins in this Section

The Indian Cents listed in this section, Connoisseur Quality Indian Cents, stand among the finest and/or most eye appealing examples known to exist. Coins of this extreme quality become available very rarely, and it is highly unlikely you will find them elsewhere.

These are examples of coins that usually trade “off the market.” That means they rarely change hands, and when they do they most likely will not be available on a web site or in an auction.

Usually the dealer who originally placed the coin reacquires it when it is time for the owner to sell, and immediately places it with another client with a single phone call. Hence it traded hands “off the market.” I have handled some of these coins as much as 4 or 5 times, yet they have not been seen in the open market in decades.

These are not price sheet coins. They trade in what we have always referred to as “the market above the market.” It is where the greatest collections are formed.

None of the dealers specializing in Copper coins, who I know and respect for their knowledge and grading skills, send their coins to CAC or pay a premium for CAC stickers above what the coin deserves on its own merit. As a group we do not have a high opinion of CAC skills on copper coins.

If you only buy CAC you miss out on the great coins like this. And if you really think you need CAC to bless a coin like this for your comfort, you should probably consider another hobby. Of course if CAC did sticker it they would then disingenuously take credit for its premium sales price.

We do not send coins to CAC, we do not support CAC standards which we see as biased, arbitrary, and out of touch with the collector market; and we believe CAC is very harmful to the health of the market, so this coin has not been there.
